The sometimes bleak, always beautiful Highlands are what many people imagine when they think of Scotland.
Yet the country?s iconic scenery is a picture of depravation: in bygone epochs those undulating uplands were carpeted with trees.

Enter the campaign to have Scotland declared the world's first 'rewilding nation'.

It launched this week and indications are that many Scots support the idea. South of the border there was tangible rewilding success with beaver reintroductions taking place in five counties in England and Wales.
